What makes a legend?

01 Jun

I recently began an internship with the North Dakota Tourism Division, whose slogan is “Legendary” which got me thinking.  What makes a legend?  Is it someone who has made an impact on society?  North Dakota has been the home of many influential individuals include Teddy Roosevelt, Peggy Lee, Louis L’Amour, and others.  North Dakota has been in the news a lot recently, mostly for the character of our citizens.  When National Geographic wrote that we are living in a “desolate wasteland,”  we were livid!  But we handed it with grace, just like with the Flood of 09.  We didn’t complain about the rising floodwaters, we just banded together and filled those dang sandbags.  You can’t forget about the now-famous journalist, Roxana Saberi.  When imprisoned, she went on a food strike to display her innocence and determination to be freed.  Now if those aren’t legendary situations, I don’t know what is.

I agree with my colleagues’ choice of Legendary describing our state, no doubt.  Am I a legend?  I hope to be one day.

Are you a legend?  What do you think makes something legendary?
