Uffda – it’s Høstfest Time

30 Sep

IMG_0740North America’s largest celebration of Scandinavian culture is taking place right now in Minot. Norsk Høstfest is a festival of dining, crafts, music, entertainment, dancing and camaraderie! Today and tomorrow, there are concerts by county music stars Clint Black and Reba McEntire. Friday and Saturday, music legends Ray Stevens and George Jones perform. Each day, there’s a ton of entertainment – like the Oak Ridge Boys, performances of the “Church Basement Ladies,” musicians, acrobats and much more!  And if you’re heading to Norsk Høstfest this week, be sure to pack your appetite. Culinary favorites include Danish Aebelskivers, lutefisk, lefse, Oof-Da Tacos, Swedish meatballs and Viking-on-a-stick.

This was my first Høstfest experience this year and Wow! The people of Minot really know how to throw a fall festival. I expected the foods to be scrumptious (and they were) and the entertainment to be top notch (and it was), but what I didn’t expect was the artisans to be just as fun to see at work. At one booth in Stockolm Hall I watched an artisan paint rosemaling on a plate (much like in the picture above) then walked over to Copenhagen Hall and watched another another spin yarn out of clipped angora rabbit fur then knit me a hat right in front of my eyes. It was an exciting 4 days filled with heritage.
