Saturday Night Live & Lawrence Welk

Saturday Night Live – Lawrence Welk Cold Open – Video –

I joined America last Saturday night, eager to watch one of the SNL’s most anticipated hosts, Betty White.  As the episode started, I was even more surprised to see North Dakota’s own Lawrence Welk!  Obviously, I know it wasn’t the real Lawrence Welk – but to have SNL paying tribute to America’s favorite “champagne music” bandleader is pretty cool.

Lawrence Welk’s story of German-immigrant roots and American dreams lives on at the Birthplace of Lawrence Welk – the family homestead near Strasberg, ND.  Visitors can tour through the well-kept sod house where Welk was born, a summer kitchen, barn, blacksmith shop and learn about Germans from Russia and the immigration stories of the area.  Tours are offered weekends, Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Thanks for posting about Lawrence… Mom and I love watching the reruns hosted by Mary Lou! We don’t miss a week. Our most recent favorites were Henry Mancini (of course!!) and Songs of the 70’s. No one did music the way he did.
