The charitable celebrity golf tournament in honor of Roger Maris kicks off this Sunday, and I’m invited! Well, not really, our PR manager, Kim Schmidt, is busy playing in the other big event of the weekend, the McQuade’s Softball tournament , so she is sending her trusty new intern for this assignment. Not a bad gig right? I can’t explain how excited I am about this event. It is such an honor to have a Legend like Roger Maris represent our state so well, and also pretty cool. Along with being a proud North Dakotan, he put his fame to grateful use when he created this event to raise money for the community of Fargo. The Legendary golf tournament is celebrating its 35th year in action and since the first year they have raised $1,440,000 for thousands of people in Fargo’s community who benefit from Hospice, the Roger Maris Cancer Center and Shanley. Celebrities that will be attending include Mark Ladwig, 2010 Olympic Silver Medalist, who graduated from Shanley High School. His fellow alumni, Rick Helling, who played in the MLB and is now a MLB Associate will be there. Along with others who have supported the tournament for many years such as Andy Strasberg, Roy Sievers, Daniel Lee Martin, Larry Ziegler, and Dick Jonckowski. Division I Basketball coaches Ben Jacobson (Head Coach Northern Iowa Men’s Basketball, former UND basketball star from Mayville, ND) and NDSU ‘s head men’s coach, Saul Phillips (Go Bison!) will also be attending.
Golfers will tee-off on Sunday and Monday morning at 7:30, with live and silent auction on Sunday at the Holiday Inn.
Wish me luck on my first major assignment, I hope to represent North Dakota Tourism at its finest and also hope I can keep my self from not getting too starstruck!
