An Epic Trail: the Maah Daah Hey

Trail Runner Magazine has just published a four-page feature on North Dakota’s Maah Daah Hey trail in their December issue.  This 97 mile single-track course winds through the Badlands of ND featuring switch-backs up (and down) buttes, ridges and canyons.

Maah Daah Hey, a Mandan Indian phrase, means “an area that has or will be around for a long time.”  The author of the story, Jennifer Chesak, writes: “The area’s history is thicker than the heady scent of sagebrush, and a run over the land will channel your inner warrior.”

The author highlights the annual Badlands Trail Run, with 5K and 10K events, which takes place August 27, 2011.

The Maah Daah Hey is the nation’s longest continuous singletrack trail.  Elevations range from 2,000 to 2,700 feet.  This summer, a second trail (nicknamed the Deuce) will add an additional 40+ miles.

Hike the trails of North Dakota on National Trails Day

June 5th marks the 17th annual National Trails Day in the United States! National Trails Day evolved from the 1987 report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. The report recommended that Americans should be able to walk out their front doors and within 15 minutes, be on trails that take them through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing any steps.

So grab your friends, a pair of hiking shoes or a bike and hit the beautiful trails of North Dakota today! There are both short and long distance trails in county’s all over the state, find one near you at the National Recreation Trail’s website  http://bit.ly/ndtrails. Also,  this is a great day to take advantage of events and guided hiking that are being taken place in North Dakota State Parks http://bit.ly/ndguidedtrails.
