Read Across America Day

March 2 is Read Across America Day and a great time to talk about North Dakota’s literary connections.  There are dozens of books that feature the beautiful scenery found in North Dakota – from books specific to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Badlands, to those showing culture and history through prairie churches.

Great American storyteller Louis L’Amour penned more than 105 works of fiction and non-fiction and is regarded as one of the world’s most popular writer.  L’Amour was from Jamestown, ND and specialized in western fiction.  At the Frontier Village in Jamestown, visitors can learn more about L’Amour’s life.

Author Lauraine Snelling currently has a series of books available fictionizing early-settler times in the Red River Valley of North Dakota.  Her fictional town of Blessing is loosely based on Drayton, North Dakota.

One of the most prominent books featuring North Dakota is Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage – a biography of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
